Liquidity pools are one of the most important—yet often overlooked—concepts in trading. Understanding how they work can help you anticipate price movements more accurately and avoid common retail trader pitfalls.

At their core, liquidity pools are areas on the chart where large volumes of orders are likely to be triggered—typically around previous highs, lows, or consolidation zones. These areas attract institutional interest and often act as magnets for price.

A key distinction lies between External Range Liquidity (ERL) and Internal Range Liquidity (IRL):

  • ERL is found at the extremes of a price range—such as swing highs or lows—where stop-loss orders are commonly placed.
  • IRL exists within the current range, often near minor highs, lows, or previous internal liquidity grabs.

Price frequently seeks out these zones to collect orders before making its next major move. That’s why understanding liquidity can help traders predict reversals, breakouts, and fakeouts more effectively.

Most retail traders unknowingly place trades into liquidity, becoming targets for larger players. Learning to identify these zones allows you to trade with liquidity instead of becoming it.

Whether you're trading forex, crypto, or indices, mastering liquidity pools gives you the edge to trade smarter—more like institutions and less like the crowd.
